Per Capita Taxes
Per capita taxes are taxes that are levied by the school district on one's person. Anyone who is 18 years old or older and living in the school district are required to pay per capita taxes. This includes those who do not own real estate, such as renters and adult children living at home. Exonerations can be granted to those whose total income (from all sources) is $5,000.00 or less per year (A w-2 form or proof of income is required), and one or more of the following criteria are met:
1. The individual reaches the age of 65 by July 1 of the tax year.
2. The individual is developmentally disabled.
3. The individual is a patient in a nursing home.
4. The individual is physically disabled and unable to work.
5. The individual is in active military service.
6. Special request (i.e. full-time student, etc.)
If you feel that you qualify, please contact your tax collector for the necessary paperwork. This paperwork will need to be filled out as completely as possible and returned to your tax collector. The Slippery Rock Area School District has established the deadline date of December 1 for the acceptance of per capita exoneration requests by the tax collector on behalf of college students and for any other reason. As stated above, in all cases, a W-2 form or proof of income MUST accompany your request.
